House Champions
After an incredibly busy and successful year of children collecting house points through earning Independent Learner awards and participation in various house competitions, we have our 2021/22 house champions! The final house point totals are as follows:

100 Club Celebration
Over 150 pupils from across all year groups and classes earned a very special treat for lunch - Domino's Pizza! This was to celebrate achieving a place in this year's 100 Club, which can be done in one of two ways:
- receiving 100 merits for independent learning (Platinum award)
- achieving 100% attendance over the year (any Covid-related absences do not count against a child's attendance this year)
Both of these are impressive achievements, for which the children were rightly proud. They thoroughly enjoyed the food provided and the time spent together. Well done to each and every pupil! Thank you also to Domino's Droitwich for supporting this event!
Bannister House Celebrate
As we approach the end of Summer term, it is time for the special reward to all of the children in the house that earned the most house points. All pupils can earn house points for their particular house by earning certificates linked to our 6Rs Learning Values, as well as through participation in our various house competitions. This term’s winning house is Bannister. The children and staff in this house showed much effort in incorporating much blue into their clothes as part of a special non-uniform day! Well done to all of Bannister house for the achievement this term, as well as all of the pupils in the other houses who offered their congratulations on this day of celebration!
Father's Day Breakfasts
Now that we are able to welcome parents back into school, it was lovely to see so many Dads (and other family members) come into school for our Father's Day Breakfasts! As well as a nice bacon roll to start the day off with, the visitors had chance to spend time with their child playing games in the hall and using some of our PE equipment down by the Muga!

Choir Performs at Droitwich Jubilee Concert
We were delighted to be asked to take part in our local community's Platinum Jubilee celebrations! Our wonderful school choir performed five songs and impressed everyone watching them on the stage in Victoria Square. Below are some photos of the children on the day:

Westacre FYI Presenter!
After being so impressed with our wonderful children during their recent visit to school, FYI offered us the chance to give one of our Year 7 pupils the fantastic opportunity of being a presenter for the Sky News show for a day! After lots of discussions in school and an online interview, Ava in 7RM was selected for the role. This then involved her working on and learning a script before spending the day at the UK's first Digital Arts gallery in Coventry. Here she joined the press launch event for the new gallery, recorded segments of the show to camera and interviewed some of the artists! Below are some photographs from the day:

Jubilee Day
Westacre spent the whole day before May half term break celebrating the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. Children came into school dressed very smartly ready for a Royal party and were welcomed into school by a very special visitor! Our visitor joined us for a special outdoor lunch and enjoyed posing for photos with lots of children! The children spent the day engaged in lots of learning about the Queen and her reign, with Maths, Reading, Writing and History activities throughout the day. All year groups took part in a special treasure hunt around school finding out more about Great Britain since 1952. At the end of the day, our whole school came together to reflect on a brilliant day, and our MPs helped put together a special historical timeline of the Queen's reign.
Reading Week at Westacre
This week, pupils have been invited to bring in their own reading material from home, from graphic novels to magazines.
Every class has been reading a book as a class, taking the time to have invaluable discussions about the books. Year 5 have been reading 'Wreck of the Zanzibar' by Michael Morpurgo, Year 6 have been reading 'Holes' by Louis Sachar, and Year 7 have been reading 'Freeze' by Chris Priestley. A special mention goes to Alana Fishwick, in 5LP, who produced a stunning piece of artwork, in response to 'Wreck of the Zanzibar'.
Classes have also been spending time in the library, taking the time to explore the non-fiction section...there were some amazing discoveries!
FYI visit
Across school, children have been watching BBC Newsround & Sky TV's FYI show since the start of the school year. This has been in class, in assemblies and even during breakfast club! We think it is important children learn about and understand what is going on in the world so being able to watch news reports from around the globe is a valuable part of all children's learning! We were very excited to receive a surprise visit from the FYI team last week, when one of their presenters Braydon and his camera crew met Year 5 during their year group assembly and spoke to them about the importance of recognising fake news.
That same day, Braydon then interviewed ten children from across our different Pupil Voice groups about the current conflict in Ukraine and about whether eSports should be included in the upcoming Commonwealth Games. All of the children who took part were chosen based on their contributions and enthusiasm throughout the year in their various meetings with the Westacre Parliament, World Watchers, Computing Ambassadors or Sports Leaders, and did a fantastic job sharing their opinions in front of the TV cameras! We have been told that Westacre will feature in an episode of FYI very soon and we will make sure will let all parents know when this will be as soon as we hear!

Attenborough House Celebrate

Tea with Mrs E
Congratulations to the children selected by their class teacher to be involved in this term’s Tea with Mrs E - an afternoon tea treat in recognition of their outstanding commitment to life at Westacre! The children enjoyed the food and drink on offer, and also enjoyed playing games with Mrs Evans!
Spring Attendance Reward
To congratulate the children in school who've achieved 100% attendance this term, we invited them into the hall to enjoy a chocolatey Easter treat and a glass of squash.
Dozens of children in each year group have achieved this impressive milestone this term (we would also add that any Covid-19 related periods of isolation do not count against a child's attendance) and we look forward to hopefully rewarding even more children during the Summer term for 100% attendance! Well done everyone!
House Wellbeing Competition
Westacre pupils were challenged to create a poster about one of our five ways to Wellbeing - Connect, Be Active, Take Notice, Keep Learning & Give. We had over 100 entries to the competition and the winning entries are proudly being displayed in the photo below!
House points were awarded for winning entries, runner-ups and for participation. In the end, the points totals were as follows:
Turing - 275
Attenborough - 225
Bannister - 200
Bronte - 100
Well done to everyone who entered and to Turing for being the overall winners! The winning entries will be made into actual posters to be displayed around school in the coming weeks.
World Book Day - Thursday 3rd March 2022
To celebrate this year's World Book Day, we walked into Droitwich Town Centre to spend our World Book Day vouchers at WHSmith. The staff were amazing and we even had some time to sit outside and read our books.
Back at school, other activities included book presentations for our most-favourite books and sharing the book characters we created from lollipop sticks.
Maths Art House Competition
Congratulations to the children chosen as winners of the Isometric Maths Art house competition! Each winner received a special Art prize, as well as 100 house points for their house. Well done to Ella & Hollie in Year 5, Vanessa in Year 6 and Tom, Jack, Emily & Freya in Year 7!

Christmas Lunch
During Christmas Jumper Day, children enjoyed a special Christmas Lunch in the school hall. The festive spirit has definitely reached Westacre Middle School!

Remembrance
For Remembrance Day this year, our whole school community came together outside to hold a minute's silence to remember all of the sacrifices made in past conflicts. We also displayed the poppies children in all classes had made during the week and heard a special reading of In Flanders Fields, the war poem by John McCrae. On Remembrance Sunday itself, Head Boy Rhys and Head Girl Zuzanna joined Mrs Evans to lay a Westacre wreath in the Droitwich Remembrance service.
Pupil Voice Lanyards
All of the many Westacre pupils who hold a pupil voice role across school have now been given their special purple lanyards to wear in school. This is to help other children identify them should they have any questions or ideas to discuss with their representatives. Congratulations to everyone who has been elected this year!
Harvest Collection
As a result of the great generosity of Westacre families, we filled three shopping trolleys with donations for the Droitwich food bank as part of this year's Harvest collection. Thank you to everyone for your support!
World Mental Health Day
On Friday 8th October, we celebrated World Mental Health Day. Our children and staff wore yellow for the day to raise awareness of the #HelloYellow campaign by Young Minds. The children spent the day learning about their own mental health and how to develop strategies on how to look after their wellbeing. We are so grateful to all of our families for the amazing food donations for Droitwich food bank that were sent in on the day, and would like offer our thanks to Waitrose in Droitwich for their kind donation of trolleys to support this!
Primary STEM Challenge
Over thirty of our most able mathematicians and scientists in Years 5 & 6 took part in this year's Stemworks Primary STEM Challenge. This involved the children working together in pairs to design and create their own robotic arm model to be used at the recycling plant Envirosort in Norton, near Worcester, before then presenting to the rest of the group about how they felt that had met all of the design criteria. Sarah from Stemworks commented on how impressed she was with the children's reasoning and problem solving! In the end, she chose Phoebe and Charlotte from Year 6 as the overall winning pair - the girls will go on to represent Westacre in a Worcestershire STEM event later in the school year. Well done to every single pupil for their achievements with this challenge!
Head Boy and Girl
Here are Head Boy Rhys and Head Girl Zuzanna. They have been chosen to take on these vitally important roles for the 2021/22 school year. They will work alongside the other pupil-elected MPs in the Westacre Pariliament but will also work closely with Mrs Evans, Mrs Doolin and Mr Barber in making important decisions about school life. Well done Zuzanna and Rhys for your appointment - we are sure you will be amazing role models this year!
Macmillan Cake Sale
For our first cake sale of the year, we raised money for Macmillan Cancer Support. After an amazing response from the Westacre community, bringing in hundreds of home made and shop bought cakes, we raised over £270 for this very worthy cause!
